You may have a good feast planned for later today,

You may have a good feast planned for later today, or you may not. Either way, a good breakfast (however that may take shape!) is good! In my house, waiting to eat or "saving room" for the big meal never ends well. So now we do it differently. Eating is the experience of grace and the experience of love. To fuel our bodies, to show ourselves care, to acknowledge that our bodies (alllll bodies, no exceptions!) matter and are worthy of the blessing of food--this is a joy for today.

A friendly little reminder that it may already be

A friendly little reminder that it may already be time to switch your turkey from freezer to fridge! And when you do...don't be the punk who simply pops it in the refrigerator, or you'll be sadly bleaching the entire thing when the juices run down and contaminate every possible surface. Why yes, we were those punks! Once! In 2011! It's a mistake you never make again! Contain that turkey for ultimate Thanksgiving thankfulness. 🦃

*you can expect to need around 24 hours of thawing for every 5 lbs of frozen turkey. So nope, can't just quick thaw it on Wednesday night!

And Saturday will be saved for leftover magic! 🌟

It starts messy and it ends messy. There are mom

It starts messy and it ends messy.

There are moments of smooth, pliable, softness, in which it all feels contained, all feels held together. But that's neither the point nor the destination of the pizza's journey. The smooth, held-togetherness of it all is a moment of rest and refuge. But then it's pulled and rolled, tossed and reshaped. It goes into fire and is burned. And then, it comes out ready for stomachs, ready to nourish in all its saucy and slippy cheese glory.

As in pizza, so in life. Sometimes I'm every one of these photos in a single day. Sometimes I'm just that dough soaring, trying not to get stuck on the popcorn ceiling. Sometimes I'm the shaggy bowl full of unworked pockets of flour. Sometimes it's hot hot hot and I want the timer to ring and bring a new stage.

And so it goes, ever continuing, ever a new feast.

If I could commend to you just one quick and easy way to spice up your meals, it's this! Pickled jalapenos are so low-cost and relatively low-effort, with an enormous payoff, and they're the perfect fall afternoon cooking project! Pop them on rice bowls, scatter across nachos, tuck into sandwiches and wraps, enjoy alongside eggs, add to salads -- they're ultimately versatile and so dang delicious. It was a special Halloween, one that had me wantin

It was a special Halloween, one that had me wanting to tuck away all the little moments into my pockets. He kept choosing kit kat bars at the self-select bowls so he could share my favorite candy with me. She was so proud of her costume and sat patiently as I applied cheetah spot tattoos over her cheeks and chin. The stars were bright and we pointed out constellations over our neighborhood and ran into friends from school in the dark streets.

And now it's Monday. Not only a new week but a new month and I've got holidays and coziness in mind. It shows in this week's menu, as comfort and warmth abound. You can see this week's menu at blackboardkitchen.com

This is how I'll remember this fall break getaway:

This is how I'll remember this fall break getaway: it was rainy and cozy, and we were so happy to be under a noisy tin roof instead of our camping tent, as originally planned. There was dancing and snacking and it was GameFest and we played 7 games. On the one sunny day our little hikers hiked 7 miles! And it was slick and steep and wow they are so big and strong.

Hi, rural Alabama. You're charming and only an hour from home and yet, thankfully, also so very far away.
