Recipe 21.3: Pizza with Tomato Sauce, Pineapple, and Jalapeno

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I was looking through my pizza recipes the other day, and I realized that, while I often make pizza, I rarely make pizza with a classic red sauce, so I decided to add another one to the collection. This features classic cheese, sauce, and crust, but with sweet and spicy toppings that play well off each other.

1 small can pineapple chunks

2 jalapenos, seeded and sliced

1/4 cup sliced red onion

1 small can tomato sauce

1/2 tsp. each basil, garlic powder, red pepper flakes

1/4 tsp. each salt, pepper, and oregano

1 pizza crust, homemade or store-bought

1/2 cup mozzarella cheese

Heat oven to 425. Prepare pizza dough. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray, then lightly dust with flour. Spread pizza dough on sheet. Bake for 5 minutes to create a slightly springy crust. Remove from oven.

Prepare sauce while dough cooks. Pour 1/2 cup sauce into a small bowl. Add seasoning and stir to combine. Taste to check seasoning. Remember that this sauce will be spread out over the entire pizza, so seasoning may taste a little strong. Don’t worry: it will be great on the pizza!

Spread evenly over pizza. Add cheese, then return to oven. Bake 5 minutes, until cheese is melted.

Remove from oven, then spread pineapples, red onions, and jalapenos over pizza. Return to oven and bake for 5 more minutes, until edges and cheese are lightly browned.
